How Much Does a Small Business Website Cost?

By Cooper Kelley, Founder, Tailwater Tech · July 15, 2026

It is the first question everyone asks, and most answers are frustratingly vague. So here is a straight one: a professional small-business website usually runs from a few thousand dollars up into the low five figures, depending on what it needs to do. The range is wide because “a website” can mean very different things. Here is what actually drives the number.

What you are really paying for

The price of a website is mostly the price of the thinking and work behind it, not the pages themselves. A cheap template site and a custom-built one can look superficially similar and perform completely differently. What you pay for is design tailored to your business, words that actually sell, a structure built to turn visitors into customers, and code that loads fast and ranks well. The cheapest options skip most of that.

What drives the price up or down

  • Size and complexity. A focused five-page site costs less than one with dozens of pages, a booking system, or e-commerce.
  • Custom vs template. A hand-built site costs more up front than a drag-and-drop template, and usually pays it back in speed, SEO, and not looking like everyone else.
  • Copywriting. Whether you write the content or someone writes it for you is a real part of the cost, and often the difference between a site that converts and one that just exists.
  • Ongoing needs. Hosting, maintenance, and updates are a smaller recurring cost on top of the build.

The cheap-website trap

A cheap template site or a DIY builder can look like a bargain, and for some businesses it is genuinely fine to start there. But too often it becomes the expensive option: slow, hard to update, invisible in search, and quietly costing you customers who bounce or never find you at all. Redoing it properly later usually costs more than doing it right once. Price the site against what a single new customer is worth to you, and the math changes fast.

How we price it

We scope every site individually and quote a clear, fixed price up front, with no hourly surprises. You tell us what the site needs to do, and you get one number and a realistic timeline before any work starts. Most small-business marketing sites come together in a few weeks.
