What Does Managed IT Cost for a Small Business?

Managed IT is usually priced per device per month, which is good news: it is predictable and it scales with you, no surprise hourly bills during a crisis. But “per device” still leaves a range, and the honest answer to “what will it cost us” depends on a few things. Here is how the pricing actually works.
How managed IT is priced
The standard model is a flat monthly fee per managed device, the computers (and sometimes servers) your team uses. That fee covers monitoring, patching, security, backup, and support as an ongoing service, rather than a bill every time something breaks. As a rough industry range, managed IT commonly runs from around $75 to $200 per device per month depending on the tier and how much security and support is included. Some providers price per user instead of per device, which can work out similarly.
What changes the number
- Device count. More devices usually means a better per-device rate, and very small accounts sometimes carry a minimum.
- Tier of service. Basic monitoring is cheaper than a full stack with managed threat detection, encryption, and tested backups.
- Regulated or not. Healthcare and financial firms need added security and documentation, which is more work and more value.
- Complexity. Servers, specialized software, and multiple locations add to it.
- Onboarding. Expect a one-time setup cost to get everything enrolled and secured properly at the start.
Watch the cheap plans
A very low per-device price often means the plan is monitoring only, with the actual security, backup testing, and real support stripped out or billed separately. That is not managed IT, it is an alarm with nobody answering it. When you compare quotes, compare what is actually included: patching, managed threat detection, MFA and encryption, tested backups, and real human support should all be in the base fee.
The real question
The better way to judge the cost is against what not having it costs. A single serious outage during your busy season, or one breach, usually dwarfs a year of managed IT. Priced against that, and against what a part-time in-house hire would run, a predictable monthly fee that prevents most of it is not the expensive option.
